Ether and Anesthetics

Operations was once, had to be done quickly because there was no way to put patients to sleep. A doctor and a dentist first used ether in the 1840s. Ether and other drugs let surgeons put patients to sleep during operations. These drugs, are called anesthetics, this reduces pain and discomforts during surgery. With anesthetics, surgeons learned how to perform longer, more complicated operations to save lives by not putting the patients asleep.

Cryosurgery

Cryosurgery is the application of extreme cold to destroy abnormal or diseased tissue. Cryosurgery works by taking advantage of the destructive force of freezing temperatures on cells. At low temperatures, ice crystals form inside the cells, which can tear them apart. More damage occurs when blood vessels supplying the diseased tissue freeze.

Warts, moles, skin tags, solar keratosis, and small skin cancers are candidates for cryosurgical treatment. Several internal disorders are also treated with cryosurgery, including liver cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, oral cancers, cervical disorders and, more commonly in the past, hemorrhoids. Generally, all tumors that can be reached by the cryoprobes used during the operation. Although found to be effective, this method of treatment is only appropriate for use against localized disease, and solid tumors larger than 1 cm, not the tiny, diffuse metastases that often coincides with cancers.

Patients undergoing cryosurgery usually experience minor-to-moderate localized pain and redness, which can be alleviated by oral administration of an analgesic such as aspirin, ibuprofen or acetaminophen (paracetamol) and by topical anesthetic cream that can help to remedy the pain a patient suffers. Blisters may form, but these usually scab over and peel away within several days.

Improper Use of Numbing Creams

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning of potentially life-threatening side effects of skin numbing products.

The products, known as topical anesthetics contain lidocaine, tetracaine, benzocaine and prilocaine in a cream, ointment or gel. The FDA is concerned the anesthetic drugs, if used improperly, may cause life-threatening side effects, such as irregular heartbeat, seizures, breathing difficulties, coma or even death.

The agency said two women died using topical anesthetics before laser hair removal. When skin temperature increases, the amount of anesthetic reaching the blood steam is unpredictable, the FDA said Friday.

The agency is advising consumers not to apply heavy amounts of topical anesthetic to large areas of skin and to avoid wrapping the treated skin with plastic wrap or applying heat from a heating pad to treated areas.

“When skin temperature increases, the amount of anesthetic reaching the blood stream is unpredictable and the risk of life-threatening side effects increases with greater amounts of lidocaine in the blood,” the FDA said in a statement.
